Purchasing power
What a sum of money can actually buy. Inflation makes it smaller over time.
At 3% inflation a year, €1,000 kept in cash buys only about what €744 buys today after 10 years. The number of euros stays the same, but each one buys less. That is why savings are best judged by what they can buy, not by the number on the statement.
